On Nov. 30, New York authorities said that two twin brothers were charged with the murder of a 35-year-old man. The man’s body was found floating in the water near Brooklyn with a cinder block bound to his ankles. It appeared that the man had been beaten to death with a hammer.
A New York minor was killed by an ex-boyfriend on Nov. 2 after she failed to reciprocate his romantic interest, according to authorities. The 19-year-old ex-boyfriend was charged with second-degree murder for the death of the 17-year-old woman.
On Nov. 11, it was reported that a woman who was accused of killing her husband during a New York kayaking trip was sentenced to four years in prison. The woman had already been in custody for two years. Additionally, she was ordered to pay $5,000 in fines.
A female psychiatrist has entered a not guilty plea in a Manhattan court. She also declared her innocence to media reporters outside the courthouse. The prosecution, however, paints a different picture that resulted in charges of second degree attempted murder and first degree attempted assault.
On Oct. 7, it was reported that New York police filed charges against a fourth person who was accused of being involved in the death of a young man. The 19-year-old Valley Stream man’s body was found in a Massapequa park in late March.
An 18-year-old male student reportedly waited for New York law enforcement to arrive at the assistant principal’s office of the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation after allegedly attacking two students with a switchblade knife. Between 15 and 20 students witnessed the knife attack that took place 15 minutes into their history class. Authorities have charged the student with murder, attempted murder and manslaughter after he apparently killed one boy, 15, and seriously wounded 16-year-old boy.
New data from the FBI says that violent crime increased for a second year in a row in the United States. However, New York residents shouldn’t be worried about a nationwide epidemic when it comes to crime. This is partially because there isn’t enough data to know if this increase is part of a larger trend or something that is confined to the present day.
On Sept. 12, a New York man was sentenced to a minimum of 50 years in prison after he was convicted on charges associated with the deaths of two prostitutes who were killed on Gilgo Beach in Long Island. The 51-year-old carpenter was convicted of two counts of second-degree murder in July though a Suffolk County assistant district attorney attributed the deaths of 10 others to the accused man.
An 88-year-old New York resident was taken into custody on Sept. 9 after he was accused of attempting to murder his wife with a hammer. The man and his wife, age 86, had been married for 60 years.
Authorities are holding a 31-year-old woman at the Monroe County Jail without bail. Police investigators allege that she shot and killed a 33-year-old woman from Brockport. The victim had been taking a lunch break from her job at Lowe’s in a nearby park when investigators believe the other woman shot her in the head. When exiting her court arraignment, the suspect directly said no when a reporter asked if she had committed the murder.
