04 Aug Man charged with DWI in deadly crash
A 33-year-old New York man who was injured in a car accident was arraigned at a hospital on July 29 on felony DWI charges. The crash reportedly resulted in the death of an 18-year-old girl. Additional charges may potentially be filed depending on the outcome of the investigation.
The crash took place on East Lake Road in Owasco at approximately 9:41 p.m. The 18-year-old driver of a vehicle reportedly was driving a 2005 Ford Escape when she pulled out of a lot. She was struck by another vehicle that was being driven by the 33-year-old man. The 18-year-old was taken to the hospital for treatment of her injuries where she died. The 33-year-old man also suffered injuries in the accident.
The accused man had a previous DWI conviction in late 2011, and he had his license revoked since then. He was being guarded at the hospital while he received treatment for unknown injuries. He was to be moved to jail once he recovered. His bail was set at $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond.
When a person is accused of drunken driving, they may be facing serious consequences especially if someone died in the incident. For example, they may be facing a jail sentence in addition to heavy fines and a loss of their driving privileges for years. In some cases, a criminal law attorney may potentially help the accused person keep their license so they can continue to go to work while the case is still active. If there is evidence that law enforcement did not follow proper procedures when it comes to roadside DWI tests, the results may potentially be questioned.
