‘STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The controversial trial-by-combat lawyer facing money laundering and kidnapping charges in an alleged scrap-metal fraud scheme agreed to a plea agreement Monday afternoon in Brooklyn Federal Court.
Richard Luthmann, 39, agreed to plead guilty to a count of wire fraud conspiracy and a count of extortion conspiracy in a written agreement with the government.
“This is a serious decision that you have to make,” U.S. Magistrate Judge Ramon E. Reyes said to Luthmann at the hearing.
Luthmann spoke firmly about his intentions to accept the written plea deal. However, during questioning Luthmann said a hospital visit in April 2018 led him to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder and anxiety.
Luthmann said he takes daily medication for bipolar disorder, but the medication does not interfere with his decision making.
Luthmann’s attorney, ARTHUR AIDALA, said he was confident Luthmann was fully aware of his decision to agree to the plea deal. ‘
