07 Jan IF YOU ARE APPROACHED BY THE POLICE, JUST RUN AWAY!
According to a Danish lawyer from Copenhagen.
Due to its active hashish market, Copenhagen has always attracted police, who patrol the surrounding areas and often stop and search passersby. Now, one Danish lawyer is calling them out for what he considers unlawful police behavior. Rasmus Paludan, a lawyer, has created a red card on which an individual can write the legal minimum amount of personal information that he or she must hand over to the police if they are stopped.
In Copenhagen, you only need to give them your name, address, and the first 6 digits of your social security number. Paludan is encouraging people who have been stopped, to hand the card to the officer, and then leave, either by walking or running away. He has created and handed out more than 2,000 of the 10,000 cards he has printed.
Paludan states that if the officer chases and arrests the citizen, he or she will be eligible for a civil wrongful arrest lawsuit. However, there is a simple caveat: this is provided you have not done anything wrong.
As we have discussed in earlier articles, the police in New York must have certain information before they are allowed to stop, question, frisk, search, or arrest someone. Depending on that level of information, it may be perfectly legal if after being approached by a police officer, you turn and run away. If you or someone you know has been wrongfully arrested, it is important to contact an experienced Manhattan or Brooklyn criminal lawyer.
