NYPD COP CHARGED IN SEX BRIBERY SCHEME

A Brooklyn police officer was charged with demanding sex in exchange for his help in expediting a woman’s NYPD application. The officer, Delfin Lantigua, obtained the woman’s contact information while working in the applicant processing department. He then allegedly used this information to contact her on Facebook where he made the offer.

Brooklyn DA Ken Thompson will not be taking this case lightly, calling the officer’s conduct “outrageous.” Officer Lantigua faces multiple felony charges, including Bribery and Bribe Receiving in the Third Degree. Bribe Receiving in the Third Degree, pursuant to Penal Law 200.10, occurs when a public servant solicits, accepts or agrees to accept any benefit from another person upon an agreement or understanding that his vote, opinion or discretion as a public servant will be influenced.

Bribery in the Third Degree is a “D” felony punishable by up to seven years in prison.

According to reports, the NYPD Internal Affairs Unit organized a meeting between Lantigua and the woman, where the cop allegedly demanded sex, $1,000, and a pair of her underwear in exchange for his help expediting her application. The woman was reported to have recorded this conversation.

In cases such as this, it is important to subpoena Facebook in order to determine the initial correspondence between the two individuals. While the allegations are certainly disturbing, was this a scenario where the officer used social media and his job title to try and romantically pursue this woman, or did he really intend to extort her by using his position and apparent influence?
