MAN ACCUSED OF ROBBING 6 CHINESE WOMEN

A man from New York City faces charges including robbery as a hate crime after he was accused of perpetrating a string of robberies on Chinese women. The district attorney said that the man targeted Chinese women because he believed them to be vulnerable, so he believed that it was appropriate to charge him with a hate crime.

Six women between the ages of 21 and 42 were allegedly attacked between March 21 and April 4 of 2015. All six of the attacks had major similarities. They all involved women of apparent Chinese descent who were walking alone at night. A man would then allegedly approach them from behind and grab their handbags, pulling them over as he fled with their possessions. Three of the six women suffered injuries in the attacks.

After the sixth attack, the police apprehended a 20-year-old man who they believe to have been the author of the crimes. He now faces a 36-count indictment for the various crimes committed during the robbery spree, and many of the infractions have been classified as hate crimes. At the time of the most recent report, he was in police custody, and his bail had been set at $50,000.

Convictions for violent crimes can carry with them heavy legal penalties, including the possibility of substantial prison time. Anyone who faces serious charges such as these may wish to seek the counsel of an attorney at law. The attorney may be able to assist them in negotiating some sort of plea bargain with the prosecutor’s office and appear with them or in their stead at any necessary court appearances.
