With Deepest Sympathy
The Brooklyn legal community has been hit particularly hard by the corona virus epidemic. Two Supreme Court Judges succumbed to the virus over the past few weeks and passed away: the Hon. Johnny Lee Baynes and the Hon. Noach Dear. I remember each of them well as former colleagues before I retired from the bench several years ago.
Judge Baynes was a man with a large physical presence but who always maintained a mild mannered demeanor and treated attorneys and litigants with the utmost respect. One of his most challenging cases was the closure and sale of Long Island College Hospital which lasted over the course of three years. Attorneys and litigants marveled at how Judge Baynes was able to maintain a very calm temperament while the parties argued over extremely volatile issues involving real estate development and the needs of the community for adequate health care.
Judge Dear was a jurist who devoted many years to serving the people of Brooklyn both as a judge, a member of the City Council and as a commissioner of the Taxi and Limousine Commission. Judge Dear was well known for presiding over foreclosure cases and always exhibiting great empathy for individuals who found themselves in financial difficulty. He went out of his way to find unique resolutions of these cases to assist homeowners in being able to keep their homes.
Both Judge Baynes and Dear will be missed by the legal community.
