BLOG from our #ABKLaw Partner Michael Jaccarino, Esq.: Gravity Knife ban lifted
A gravity knife, small, easy to use blades that are defined under New York law as a knife with the blade in the handle that can be opened with a one-handed flick of the wrist, are now legal. The knives, which were illegal to possess and previously categorized as “deadly weapons,” and in the same category as guns, daggers, and switchblades, have been removed from this category this week after a bill was signed by Governor Cuomo. Critics have long said the law punished ordinary and hardworking people, including warehouse workers, stagehands and steelworkers, who use the knives for work. The bill was a result of seven years of lobbying by lawmakers and has been hailed by public defenders, who have long argued that the law allowed the police to use discriminatory practices. However, New Yorkers should be aware that it is still illegal to possess a gravity knife in the NYC subway system.
