‘Trial by combat’ lawyer gets $1.5M bail in extortion case

A controversial Staten Island lawyer charged in a kidnapping and extortion plot can be released from jail on $1.5 million bond, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Richard Luthmann — a “Game of Thrones” fan who’s infamous for once challenging a rival attorney to trial by combat — has been locked up since his stunning, Dec. 15 arrest in a case involving his alleged claim of ties to organized crime.

But Brooklyn federal Magistrate Judge Vera Scanlon said Luthmann could get sprung pending trial on a bond co-signed by his mother and stepfather if they secure it with three retirement accounts and their homes in Staten Island and Florida.

Terms of Luthmann’s release include house arrest monitored by a GPS-equipped ankle bracelet and no contact with his co-defendants or any potential witnesses against him.

Luthmann — who’s also been accused of creating fake Facebook profiles as part of a political dirty-tricks scheme — would also be barred from using the internet or any social media.

Scanlon’s ruling came over objections by prosecutor Moira Kim Penza, who said the feds were worried about potential witness tampering if Luthmann went free.

“The government is not going to be able to monitor Mr. Luthmann,” she said.

“Mr. Luthmann thinks he is above the law…that he is not going to get caught.”

Defense lawyer Arthur Aidala called it “pure hyperbole that he is going to be involved in obstruction of justice” said there’s no evidence “that shows he is a danger to society.”

“He is well-known. I am not going to say he is well-liked. His mother and father love him,” Aidala added.
