The son of Fox News commentator Geraldo Rivera was sentenced Wednesday to time served for choking and biting his ex-girlfriend during two separate spats inside his Washington Heights apartment.
Cruz Rivera, 31, wearing a navy suit, appeared in Manhattan Supreme Court, where he previously copped to the attempted assault and disorderly conduct charges as part of a re-pleader agreement with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
The veteran journalist’s son is accused of choking ex-girlfriend Meghan Burke during a heated exchange on April 28, 2018, inside his West 175th Street pad.
A few days later, he allegedly flung Burke onto his bed, placed her in a chokehold and bit her leg during a brawl at the same apartment.
The younger Rivera didn’t speak during the brief hearing, in which Judge Maxwell Wiley handed down the light sentence. He completed a domestic violence program as part of the plea deal.
Outside court, defense lawyer Arthur Aidalla said, “We’re happy to put this behind us. Cruz is moving forward with his life with his family, his wife and his children. He’s moving into a new house. He’s got a great job. Everything is wonderful. This chapter is closed and there’s a lot of new ones that are about to be opened.”
