Voluntary intoxication is not a defense

Voluntary intoxication is not going to hold up as a defense. Involuntary intoxication may in some cases, such as if a person spikes your drink when you're only 19 years old and you unknowingly partake in underage drinking. If you chose to get drunk and then committed a crime, though, you cannot use the fact that you were drunk to stay out of trouble.

Man facing drunk driving charges following car crash

On April 7, a New York man was taken into custody after he was accused of causing a car accident while under the influence of alcohol. Authorities claimed that the 30-year-old Bridgeport man also had cocaine and marijuana in his vehicle at the time of the crash.

MMA FIGHTER MCGREGOR FACES ASSAULT CHARGES

A judge set mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor free on $50,000 bail following a melee at the Barclay Center during a media event. The purpose of the event was to publicize a series of fights set to take place in Brooklyn. McGregor, the best-known fighter in MMA, is facing one count of criminal mischief and three counts of assault. The Ultimate Fighting Championship had announced its intention to strip him of his title, and the incident is believed to be related to that. McGregor turned himself in to police after video of the incident went viral.

Alleged drunk driver charged with multiple felonies

A New York man was charged with driving while intoxicated after his car rolled over in the town of LaGrange on March 25. The 52-year-old man, who is from Fishkill, was charged with felony DWI in addition to other felony and misdemeanor charges.

NEW YORK MAN CONVICTED OF SLAYING IMAM AND ASSISTANT

A 37-year-old New York man faces the prospect of spending the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole for the slaying of a Muslim cleric and his assistant in August 2016. A state Supreme Court jury spent a day deliberating before returning guilty verdicts on two counts of murder in the second degree, one count of murder in the first degree and a weapons possession charge. Sentencing in the case is scheduled to take place on April 18.
